Bills of popular initiative that became laws in Brazil

Post by soniya55531 »

Due to the difficulty of verifying more than a million signatures, since the popular initiative was conceived, only four Bills authored by citizens have become laws. However, despite having been created by society, only one of the laws is officially recognized as a popular initiative proposal. This is because deputies interested in the proposals presented had to “adopt” them, since by accepting them as their own, the verification of signatures is dispensed with.

See the four popular initiative projects approved to date:

1) Law 8.930/1994: the Daniella Perez case
The first Bill of Law of popular initiative, sanctioned in 1994, was nepal mobile database motivated by the death of actress Daniella Perez, daughter of author Glória Perez, in 1992. After both defendants were released on bail, the victim's mother collected signatures to include qualified homicide in the list of heinous crimes.

Subscriptions : 1.3 million

2) Law 9.840/1999: combating vote buying
The project emerged from the launch of the campaign Combating Electoral Corruption, promoted by the Brazilian Justice and Peace Commission (CBJP), in 1997, with the aim of curbing the crime of vote buying through the revocation of mandates and payment of fines.

Subscriptions : 1.06 million

3) Law 11.124/2005: social housing
Presented by the Popular Housing Movement in 1992, the project aimed to create a system for the low-income population to access the construction, purchase or renovation of their own home, in response to the country's housing deficit. After 13 years of processing, the National Social Interest Housing Fund was created.
