People living with HIV and those potentially exposed to HIV in China are expected to benefit from GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) innovative research to prevent and treat the disease, as the global pharmaceutical company seeks to further expand its presence in the market.

“GSK’s innovative and cost-effective HIV treatment and prevention solutions in China will contribute to overall improvements in AIDS prevention and care in the country ,” said Lauren Carey, vice president and head of the international region for ViiV Healthcare, GSK’s HIV care subsidiary.

Carey's announcement comes after the London-based company announced in May that its innovative drug PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, which reduces the chance of HIV transmission, had been approved for the Chinese market, with the long-acting option able to last for two months for people at risk.

“Our scientists continue to bring new innovations to people living with HIV in China. In doing so, we base our innovations on the needs and wishes of patients, as well as on the opinions of clinicians ,” said Carey.

"China's HIV prevention efforts have achieved remarkable results so far. More and more HIV-infected people are receiving routine testing and systematic treatment, turning what was once a fatal disease into a manageable chronic infectious disease ," said Dai Lili, a professor at Beijing Yuan Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University.

But HIV prevention still faces significant challenges, including the continued expansion of high-burden areas, rising numbers of new cases among adolescents and older people, increasing late detection and severe comorbidities, Dai said.
