The Future of Cloud: From Hybrid to Edge and AI-Powered

The next phase of cloud computing will change the way it works, and artificial intelligence will play a big role in how it delivers on its promise, writes ZDNet columnist David Gewirtz.
(WMO) recognizes ten main types of clouds. Cirrus, rain, ordinary stratus, etc. - there are quite a lot of varieties. As well as technological "clouds".
In fact, these days, technology clouds are also different because not all of them live in data centers. Some behave the same way, but live entirely on-premises in private installations. Some go all the way from the “edge” (the point of contact with reality) to the racks of servers that we typically associate with both the cloud and traditional data centers.
In 1997, Professor Ramnath K. Chellappa, now at finland mobile database University, first used the term “cloud computing” in a paper titled “Intermediaries in Cloud-Computing.” Since then, we have seen significant changes in what cloud computing means for IT operations and how it is being applied to solve problems of societal importance.
What does the future of cloud computing look like in the next 3-5 years? After the pandemic, it has become even more interesting to figure this out. Since 2020, cloud computing has made a huge leap forward, with many companies fulfilling their ten-year roadmaps in ten months — and some even in ten weeks — due to the huge increase in demand for digital information and e-commerce.
The Meaning of Cloud Computing Is Changing
The idea of scalable, measurable, centrally managed computing infrastructure delivered on demand works. It fits the business models of companies ranging from startups to large enterprises. Today, it’s better to define cloud computing based on these characteristics than to continue to define it as computing infrastructure managed by someone else in an outsourced data center.
