Lysosomal diseases are congenital metabolic errors that occur as a result of the malfunctioning of lysosomes, the recycling units of cells. There are more than 70 types of lysosomal storage diseases, so the clinical manifestations are very varied. All of them are serious and rare, and they occur in childhood, youth and adulthood.
This is the case of Manuel Barrera, who is short due to a metabolic israel phone number data disorder, hearing loss and a respiratory disease. Manuel is 35 years old, lives in Valencia and belongs to the MPS-Lysosomales España Association , an institution that put him in contact with the Adecco Foundation to expand his employment options.
He studied a professional certificate in graphic arts and has worked in the public eye. Despite his training in web and video editing, he would prefer to work in the service sector. Thanks to the support of his consultants from the Adecco Foundation, Roberto Míguez and Marta Gómez, Manuel has developed a career path to seek new opportunities. After these first steps, we spoke with Manuel to find out his opinion on the labour inclusion of people who, like him, have a disability certificate due to a rare disease.
How does your disability, lysosomal disease, affect your daily life?
Especially in mobility and because of height, things that are not within my reach and I need help to get to them. Over the years you learn to live with it.
And in your job search? Have you ever encountered barriers? If so, what kind?
Yes, it is quite complicated when someone has a rare disease or certain limitations that require adaptations to the position. Mainly it is difficult because the spaces are not adapted to my height.
Has your employability improved since you started your career path at the Adecco Foundation? What dynamics, workshops or orientation sessions have you done?
It is a complicated subject, especially for people in my situation. Although I have not yet found a job, I have noticed the support and the improvement in employability, so I think that the help in this regard is also very positive. I receive offers that I can attend an interview for and otherwise I would not have been able to. I have done an interview workshop that I was very interested in. I would like to work on.
