Google’s core algorithm updates are to SEO what galaxies are to a hitchhiker. And, to adapt a quote from Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to our context:
"A Google Core Algorithm Update is a big deal. Really big deal. You wouldn't believe how enormously, incredibly, freaking big it is. I mean, you might think that walking to your local pharmacy is a long greece whatsapp number way, but that way is a mere trifle compared to a Google Core Algorithm Update."
And if Douglas had written about SEO instead of guides for people who can't afford their own spaceships, he wouldn't have exaggerated with this quote.
Which brings us to the purpose of this article.
If Google's core algorithm updates are so incredibly important, then there's no doubt that we need to prepare for them.
Before we get to that, though, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page about what Google’s Core Algorithm Updates actually are.
What is Google's Core Algorithm Update?
Also called Broad Core Algorithm Update, for brevity we will refer to it as Core Update in the rest of this article.
A Core Update is an update to the core elements of a search engine.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here's one.
At an incredibly simplistic scale, you can think of Core as relating to all other algorithms more or less as follows:

Again, this is an extremely simplistic model, but what I am trying to illustrate is that there are a variety of different algorithms that handle, interpret, and output various functions and signals. And then there is "the Core."
If we think about the wide range of different algorithms involved in processing the signals used to rank a page (to judge one page against another, to determine which items should exist on a specific SERP, etc.), it is easy to see how “Backlinks” are not all lumped into a single metric as illustrated above, but rather are evaluated according to a variety of characteristics, each with different signals, metrics, and possibly algorithms of their own.
Additionally, backlinks are about trust, which has a variety of signals and algorithms of its own.
The Core is also divided into several different algorithms and functions but with one great purpose: to control the rest.

A different way of seeing it
As nerdy as it may sound, I find it helpful to think of the Core as the Borg from Star Trek. And there's a good reason for that.
For those poor souls who don't know what they are, the Borg Collective is a species of individual drones connected and controlled by an overarching system, busily operating Borg Cubes (their ships) and subjugating other species. The Queen (the Core in our scenario) controls and coordinates everything. This is done automatically and over vast distances using the communications systems built into each drone and their Cubes.
Basically, a queen has the big picture of all the parts and makes them work in unison. Like a colony of ants. Like Google Core.
