Why Google's 10 Blue Links Will Have to Go (Sooner or Later)

Despite growing discussion about topics like 0-click searches and the proliferation of SERP features, Google's results are primarily based on blue links.

The 10 blue links (on desktop there are more or less 9 and on mobile they have a semi-infinite scroll) form the basis of the SERP in the vast majority of cases, even when the SERP features seem to dominate.

What are blue links (what do they say about Google)?
Before we get into why I think the 10 blue links are going away soon , let’s first understand what organic listings in Google’s SERP are.

For our purposes here, I'm much more interested in what "blue links" say about Google, about users, and about search as a concept . (Also, let me be clear from the start: I'm not suggesting that Google eliminate organic results. I'm saying that the way they're presented now is unsustainable.)

Organic SERP results are like a business trip . You are not there to explore or discover the charms of a city. You are there for a specific goal and purpose, and once you have achieved it, you will leave.

Organic results with links to 8 or 9 web pages is a journey of work. You go to the page, get the information and you are done.

Organic results do not take the user beyond the page they clicked on (in any structured way). They do not guide them, offer a path or anything like that. They are just there . They are options, nothing more and nothing less.

Regarding the status of users, organic results say:

People are utilitarian. They have a goal of obtaining very specific information and when they have obtained it they move away from the ecosystem.

In this light, organic results are not very “flattering” in terms of what they say about the nature of people and their quest for knowledge. Even Google admits this, with its notion of “Research as a journey ,” which sees people seeking well-rounded, multi-layered understanding.

The problem is that acquiring information and knowledge is not similar to a business trip. You need to get to the "heart" of a topic to understand it . For this reason, the way Google presents the SERP and its blue links will change.
