What is App Store Optimization (ASO) and How is it Done?

Post by mstlucky8072 »

The number of mobile applications is increasing day by day and with this increase, a competitive environment is emerging between applications. Similar processes that are done to optimize websites should also be done in application markets for mobile applications to reach more users. This is where ASO (App Store Optimization) comes into play.

To help your mobile app rank higher in the App Stores and attract more users, you will need an App Store Optimization strategy.

What is ASO?
App Store Optimization, or ASO, is the optimization process used to increase visibility and conversions by ranking applications higher in places such as Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

How applications are ranked in the Google Play Store and App Store, and what factors affect this ranking, are unfortunately hidden and not disclosed here, as in SEO. With the tests and experiences you have conducted, you can analyze what affects your App Store rankings and ensure that the necessary actions are taken.

What are the differences between ASO and SEO?
Although ASO and SEO are similar in many aspects such as keyword analysis and conversion rate optimization, SEO is done for websites, while ASO is done for mobile applications.

While factors such as page titles and site speed are important in employment database ranking in SEO, application title, description and comments are among the most important factors for ASO.

The majority of users use the search button in the market to find and download applications.

Especially new applications can gain much more visibility when they appear in these search results with ASO. If your application or game is not among the top rankings that users first look at, you may miss out on potential customers.

App Store Ranking Factors
Google Play Store & App Store ranks applications and games according to some metrics. While some factors are common, some factors differ. As the number of applications increases, Google and Apple are now more careful in choosing these applications.

Apple App Store & Google Play Store Ranking Factors
Application name,
Category selection,
Description of the application,
Pictures & videos,
Application icon (favicon),
Comments,
Evaluations,
Updates,
App speed & freezing problems,
Number of downloads,
And other unknown factors.
Now let's examine these factors in detail;

1. Application Name
Your app name is one of the first things every user sees, so it's important to choose your app name wisely.

Make sure your app title is relevant to your app, easy to read, and unique. If it’s an engaging title and users like it, they may search for you in app stores by that name.

Also keep in mind that there are character limits when choosing app names.

There is a 50-character limit in the Google Play Store and a 30-character limit in the Apple App Store.

2. Application Description
App description is an important part of your app’s metadata. It gives users information about what your app is about. Various optimizations can be made by performing keyword research in this section.

Google Play & App Store uses the information here to rank apps, and apps that use this area efficiently appear higher in app results. When creating content for this section, you can create descriptions that are free of spam, informative, easy to understand, and contain information for users.

Note that there is a 4,000 character limit here too.

3. App Icon
You can use icons that describe your apps and that users can associate with your brand when they see them in search results. You can determine which icon users like as a result of various A/B tests without including too much text and elements in the favicon and use that icon in your app.

4. Pictures & Videos
Adding images and even videos that explain the inside of the app helps users see what awaits them before they even download the app. Adding images that explain the app very well to app stores is one of the ASO factors that can increase downloads.
