Types of Data Calls

Post by adiba jahan »

Understanding the Basics: Voice Call vs. Data Call
Traditionally, when we think of making a phone call, we think of circuit-switched voice calls — this is the method used by older cellular networks like 2G and 3G. These voice calls transmit audio over a dedicated circuit in the mobile network.

A data call, on the other hand, uses your mobile data connection (3G, 4G LTE, or 5G) to transmit information — including voice, video, text, and images — over the internet. Instead of using coo email list traditional voice networks, a data call is facilitated via packet-switched networks, which break down your communication into data packets and send them over the internet.

There are several types of data calls that your phone may use, including:

1. Voice over IP (VoIP) Calls
Apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio, Skype, or Zoom use Voice over IP to make voice calls over the internet. These are classic examples of data calls. The voice data is converted into digital signals and transmitted over the web.

2. Video Calls
When you make a video call using Messenger, Google Meet, or WhatsApp, you're making a data call. These calls require more bandwidth than VoIP calls because they transmit both video and audio in real-time.

3. Wi-Fi Calling
Many modern smartphones support Wi-Fi Calling, which allows users to make calls over a Wi-Fi network instead of relying on the mobile carrier’s cellular towers. Though it feels like a normal call, technically it's a form of a data call because it uses an internet connection.

4. VoLTE (Voice over LTE)
VoLTE is another important form of data call. It allows users to make high-definition voice calls over a 4G LTE data network instead of falling back to 3G or 2G for voice services. VoLTE offers better call quality, faster connection times, and the ability to use data simultaneously during calls.
