AI Overview will not lead to less organic search traffic

At the same time, both Marcus Tober and Johannes Beus considered Gartner's prediction that organic search traffic would decline by 25% by 2026 due to AI to be too pessimistic:

“There is no reason for acute panic – even if no one knows what the world will look like in 5 years.”

Tober pointed out that even before the rollout of AI Overview (AIO for short), Google benin phone number data was answering more and more search queries directly on the platform – e.g., via featured snippets or knowledge panels – and that the share of zero-click searches was already at 45% in 2022. An analysis of SERP features before and after the rollout of AIO has now shown that AIO is essentially replacing featured snippets, pushing organic results further up the rankings.

When and if AIO will be rolled out in Germany is also still unclear. In the US, Google entered into a deal with Reddit so that its AI can learn from the content. This was coupled with a massive increase in Reddit's visibility. If a similar trend can be observed in Germany, this could be an indication of an imminent rollout of AIO here as well.
