Discrimination can take many forms and is illegal in most countries, some more advanced than others. Generally, discrimination laws are intended to protect people from being treated unfairly because of their race, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability status, or any other legally protected characteristic.
In the United States, several federal laws prohibit discriminatory practices in businesses. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents discrimination in employment based on race, color, national origin, or sex. This includes disqualifying an individual based solely on membership in a protected class, without regard to whether or not he or she is qualified for the position. Title VII of this law also provides protection for other factors, such as religion and sexual orientation (although these protections vary by state).
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) prohibits age discrimination against employees over british student data the age of 40. At the same time, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities unless doing so would cause them an undue hardship.
