Due to the worsening political climate, the Russian cyber business has suffered damage - Kaspersky Lab has once again fallen under attack, with its products even recommended not to be used by government agencies in the US and UK, and non-public information is also known about the cancellation of the opening of Global Security Delivery Centers in Russia - clients are simply afraid to receive services from "Russian hackers".

In fairness, it should be noted that restrictions on the use of foreign security tools have been present in Russia for a long time, and since 2014 they have been strengthened and extended to all foreign software.

Despite the billion-dollar losses from WannaCry and ExPetr, mass hacks of crypto companies and wallet holders, the situation in the information security sphere was relatively calm in 2017. It seems that the news resembles reports from the front, but they pale in comparison to what awaits us.

Throughout 2017, the government, the jamaica mobile database sector, and Rostelecom were actively working on developing remote identification technologies. In December, a corresponding bill was adopted, and remote identification itself should start working in mid- 2018. This means that trillions of assets in the Russian banking system will become fundamentally more accessible — and therefore subject to risk. Insufficient attention to remote identification security issues could lead to a full-scale economic crisis simply because of the insufficient level of cybersecurity.

In May 2017, the world once again remembered the need to regularly install security updates. This practice is not new, but neither is it new for businesses to ignore it. The WannaCry attack only publicly affected Megafon Retail and Rosneft, while the non-public number of victims is much higher, and globally, the losses are measured in billions of dollars. The attack was essentially similar to the Mirai attack at the end of 2016 and will remain relevant for a long time - until businesses and IT learn to update their systems in a timely manner. Fortunately, this is possible - a number of technology companies and government organizations in Russia were not affected at all.
