What is the difference between tone and voice?
PersonalityIn the context of content marketing, the voice refers to the personality of your company. Every successful company has a unique voice – and that is exactly where the power of this concept lies. The tone is the attitude towards the reader. The fact that your company has a voice does not mean that this voice reaches the reader. Compare it to your own personality that you try to communicate to the outside world. The ugly truth is that you do not always succeed: the personality that you assign to yourself almost never exactly mirrors the personality that others assign to you. The tone is, as it were, the guide that accompanies your brand personality to the outside world, the tone that gives meaning to your voice. In short: the tone of your voice.

Ever gotten a discount and still paid more? The H&M employee I spoke to last week managed to do it. Fun fact: it has everything to do with tone of voice.

Me: “Good evening, sorry for the late call because you probably want to go home, but I
have a question.”
Employee: “Sure, no problem lady! Tell me.”
Me: “I really ordered online 10 minutes ago and just uganda phone data came across a discount code. Could you please process it anyway?”
Employee: “Well *silence* go ahead… because it’s you!”
Me: “That makes me happy.”
Employee: “I calculated the discount and the new amount is… €190.60.”
Me: “Haha, you’re cute.”
Employee: “You’re going to like me even more, because I have a special offer for you.
With this special discount code you get a pair of pants for half the price!”
Me: “I don’t know, I’ll just leave it alone.”
Employee: “The promotion is going great – and if I look at your order it fits in perfectly with
the rest. And if you don’t like it, you can always return it for free.”

Trousers H&MThe bottom line is that I took him up on his offer and that because of that the bill became higher instead of lower after the phone call. After some reflection I realized that I would never have 'fallen' for such an offer, if I had not had such a nice personality on the line; his tone of voice is young, informal and entertaining (voice). He speaks to me as if he has known me for a long time, is enthusiastic and he provides service. Unfortunately I had to return the pants.
