A 2023 global study by Statista shows that nearly half of internet users (49%) use social media to stay connected with loved ones. Additionally, 39% of respondents say they use social media to spend their free time, and 34% use it to stay informed.

Interestingly, most people use YouTube on a phone, not their desktop (yes, we love watching videos on tiny screens).

Pew Research Center surveyed internet users around the world, and in nearly every country surveyed (except two), half or more of those surveyed used social media.
These figures are highest in Latin America and Asia: in Brazil, for example, 86% of respondents are present on social media, ahead of Malaysia with 83%.
